Far Out of my Comfort Zone
Last night I read at an open mic night for the first time ever. I had no idea what to expect. When we got there–a place that was also new to me–we were met with pleasant surprises.
The Unison Art Center in New Paltz, NY has a comfortable, welcoming vibe. The performances were really fun. Several people played ukuleles or guitars, some covering songs but most singing original music. One gentleman read moving poems, and my friend read a short story and a poem. After the first performer sang one of my favorite songs from childhood, I knew it would be a good night.
As an introvert, speaking in front of a crowd is always challenging for me unless it’s a group I already know. But this crowd was welcoming and engaged. One woman even asked for information about my book. It was a great time all around, and I’m looking forward to doing it again.
